How to Clean a Laptop Screen

Is your laptop screen dirty with fingerprints and dust? You could either clean it with a cleaning kit designed specifically for use on LCD and Plasma screens or use household products. There are two things you should pay attention to when cleaning LCD screens: the type of cleaning solution and the type of cloth.

Here’s how to clean a laptop screen:

  • Shut down your laptop, unplug it and remove the battery (you will better see the dust on a black screen and avoid potential damage).
  • Use plain distilled water or combine 1 cup of distilled water with 3 tablespoons of white vinegar.
  • Apply the solution to a soft cloth.
  • Wipe your laptop screen gently (this is important, never press hard or scrub).

Hints:

  • Do not blow air from your mouth on the screen. ;) It will not clean the fingerprints.
  • Do not use products that contain alcohol or ammonia on your laptop screen.
  • Do not spray the solution directly, it could damage the screen.
  • The cloth should be moist, not wet.
  • We recommend lint-free microfiber or cotton cloth for cleaning LCD screens (an old T-shirt could do the job too). Never use paper towels because they contain wood fibers and could scratch the screen.
  • Tap water is not recommended, because it could leave mineral spots on the screen.
  • LCD (liquid crystal display) is not glass. Never use glass cleaners.
  • Some people use a 1:1 solution of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is acceptable and shouldn’t hurt the screen.
